CPTSD: VARIATION ORIGINATING IN EARLY LIFE
complex trauma describes both children’s exposure to multiple events—often of an Invasive interpersonal nature—and the wide-ranging, long-term effects of this exposure. They usually occor early in life and can disrupt many aspects of the child’s development and The formation of a sense of self. Since these events often occur with a caregiver, they interfere with the child’s ability to form a secure attachment.
Research has shown that children who experience early childhood trauma, abuse or neglect are more likelY to go on to develop profound and long-lasting mental health problems in adulthood, such as complex ptsd. This differs from ptsd which is more typicallY associated with a single traumatic incident or set of traumatic events.
The risk of developing complex ptsd is greater if the trauma or abuse is repetitive and prolonged, involves harm or abandonment by caregivers and if it occurs At a developmentally vulnerable age such as early childhood or adolescence, which are critIcal periOdS of brain develOpment.

LITTLE BABY BLUE FISH
WHERE COULD YOUR DADDY BE?
HE’S GONE AWAY AWHILE TO SEE ALL HE CAN SEE.
LITTLE BABY BLUE FISH
WHERE COULD YOUR MAMA BE?
IN HER ROOM BLOWING BUBBLES, 1, 2, 3.
LITTLE BABY BLUE FISH
WHATEVER WILL YOU DO?
I’LL GO AND FIND ANOTHER PLACE
WHERE I’M NO LONGER BLUE.

IT IS MY BELIEF THAT MANY OF US WHO HAVE COMPLEX PTSD ARE NOT PEOPLE WHO ARE SELF-PITYING AND “OVERLY SENSITIVE” (THOUGH SOME ARE HSP, HAVING A FORM OF NEURO-DIVERGENCE, WHICH IS ACTUALLY A GIFT). WE ARE PEOPLE WHO SPEND A GREAT DEAL OF OUR TIME TRYING TO REGULATE AND TO APPEAR NORMAL WHILE MANAGING FLASHBACKS THROUGHOUT EACH DAY. THIS PROCESS IS DEPLETING AND CAN ROB US OF EVEN THE SMALLEST JOYS OR SENSE OF WELL-BEING. WE ARE THOSE WHO HAVE SOUGHT HELP FROM EVERY SOURCE IMAGINABLE, OFTEN HIGH-FUNCTIONING AND PRETENDING WE ARE WELL-ADJUSTED, COVERING OUR TRUE SELVES. TO BE VULNERABLE AND AUTHENTIC IS TO PLACE OURSELVES IN PSYCHOLOGICAL DANGER. SAFETY IS PURCHASED THROUGH CAMOUFLAGE. THOSE WITHOUT COMPLEX PTSD OR WHO ARE NOT TRAUMA-INFORMED HAVE NO WAY OF UNDERSTANDING THIS CONDITION.
I DO BELIEVE THERE ARE JEWELS OF RECOVERY TO BE FOUND. I HAVE FOUND MY OWN JEWELS ALONG THE WAY AND THAT LIST IS GROWING~~~
WHAT IF LIFE IS NOT THE DISTORTED DREAM WE ARE IN? WHAT IF IT IS ACTUALLY A MAGNIFICENT UNFOLDING MYSTERY? IN SINCERITY AND HOPE, I SHARE SOME THINGS THAT HAVE HELPED ME ON MY JOURNEY. MAY SOMETHING HERE, IF ONLY HONESTY, HELP ANOTHER WITH CPTSD.
